Everyone Carries a Graveyard Within

RastinewsI learned late: a person's identity hides exactly where they have been hurt most.

Perhaps a person gives themselves away exactly where they hide the most. I didn't know this when I first saw you. Looking back now, I realize I recognized you from the start by the places where it hurt.

That day, as you spoke, your eyes were elsewhere. Your words were composed, even calm. But the silences between them carried the real story.

You showed me your wounds, not directly; no one ever does directly. I covered mine with what I left unsaid. Sometimes two people draw closest through what they each hide.

In time I noticed that it wasn't just our bodies that carried scars, but our spirits too. Marks left by the past, pain papered over. Some looked scabbed over; others still flinched at a touch, as fresh as if no time had passed.

A wound is the thing you suddenly remember just when you thought you'd forgotten it. And people bleed most from the place they believed had healed.

You don't need to have suffered greatly to know this. A small moment, an ordinary word, a familiar voice is enough.

Sometimes a person peels back their own scab with their own hands, believing they have healed.

A scab is often not a form of healing but a form of hiding. Perhaps you knew that better than I did. Or perhaps I only thought so because I saw myself in you.

Where I fell silent, your wounds spoke. Where you fell silent, mine did. Without haste, without spreading the pain wider, as if probing with the tip of a knife. Neither fully exposed nor fully concealed. Somewhere in between, on that thin line a person can't even admit to themselves.

That old saying, that time heals all wounds, is one of the biggest lies we tell ourselves. Time is a skilled painter. It doesn't ease the pain; it simply layers coat after coat over it. The colors change, the image softens, but what lies beneath stays exactly as it was.

Inside every person lies a graveyard full of unnamed pain. I never told you this, but you knew it too. Some headstones carry names and dates; those we can describe, we can put into words. But there are also blank stones. That's where the real weight sits. What can't be put into words, what shrinks the moment it's spoken, what remains misunderstood even when told.

In time, a person learns to walk through this inner graveyard. They walk on tiptoe, so as not to step on the past. They hold their breath, so as not to wake an old ache. But no matter how careful you are, the stones are there: heavy, stubborn, silent.

One day, when you least expect it, you stumble. In a glance, in a silence. You find yourself a stranger within yourself. And in that moment you understand: it never passed. It only waited.

In the days I tried to get to know you, I paid attention not to what you said, but to what you left unsaid. Because what gives a person away is not what they say, but what they cannot say. Identity isn't found on display; it hides in those hidden corners, the ones hurt most, the ones most concealed, the ones that still ache.

We recognized each other through our wounds. Because only those who bleed from the same place truly understand each other's language.

A wound that's been covered over isn't healed; it's only become invisible. What matters isn't time but when it will be remembered again. Whatever a person refuses to face, they carry inside them. And everything carried long enough turns into the person themselves.

That's why some wounds still ache years later. Time passes, but the pain stays put, warm and alive beneath the surface.

Sometimes a person reopens a wound not to heal it, but to know it's still there. That isn't weakness. It may be the silent fight they wage against forgetting.

We dig graves inside ourselves. Every grave has a stone, but not every stone has an inscription. The blank stones are where we hurt the most. The part that never finds words.

Then one day, wandering among those stones, you feel like a guest. As if you'd merely stopped by inside yourself, without belonging there. Sometimes you wake up a stranger even to your own pain, as if the wound weren't yours, as if you hadn't dug that grave yourself.

But the stone is there. Silent, heavy, stubborn.

In time, a person learns to live in this graveyard. They lighten their step, avert their gaze. But some stones you keep turning back to look at. You can't escape them.

And in an instant, everything begins again.

That's when you understand: nothing ever passed. It only waited.

Because some pain doesn't speak. It circulates inside you. It's silent, but the silence grows. And one day, a person hears themselves within that silence.

They realize that what they carry isn't a memory but a shadow. Not a shadow trailing behind them, but one walking inside them.

That's why some headstones are still waiting to be inscribed. However deep you dig, something remains missing.

And it is in that depth that a person most often meets themselves.

I recognized you by your wounds.

Maybe that's why a person can't explain themselves; they can only leak through. In a glance, in a silence, most of all in the moment they least expect.

Because some stories aren't meant to be told. They're meant to be carried.

And a person…

is only as much themselves as what they carry
