Press freedom report from DFG: Pressure on journalists has become systematic
RastinewsThe Dicle-Fırat Journalists' Association (DFG) has released its report on rights violations against journalists for the month of August. The report states that detentions, arrests, investigations and digital access blocks targeting journalists and press organizations have continued.
According to the report released by DFG on September 3, three journalists were detained and one journalist was arrested in August. Investigations were opened against five journalists, while the trials of four journalists continued in two separate case files.
The association pointed out that journalists' news reports, interviews and social media posts were used as grounds for investigations, noting that press activities have been turned into the subject of judicial proceedings.
Access blocks on digital media
The report also devoted extensive coverage to interventions targeting the digital platforms of press organizations.
According to DFG's data, access to the X accounts of Medya Haber, Etkin Haber Ajansı and JINNEWS was blocked. The X accounts of Mezopotamya Agency were made inaccessible from Turkey, while an access block was also applied to the Instagram account of Nujin Medya.
It was also noted that JINNEWS's YouTube channel, which had previously been blocked from access in Turkey, was shut down entirely.
DFG stated that the resulting picture shows that journalists and press organizations continue to be subjected to systematic pressure because of their professional activities.
The association called for an end to investigations, detentions and arrests targeting journalists, and for the removal of access blocks imposed on the digital accounts of news and press organizations.
