PKK's disarmament process: claim of new mechanism
RastinewsFollowing the PKK's dissolution decision, it has been claimed that a new mechanism has been established between Ankara, Baghdad, Erbil and Sulaymaniyah to monitor the disarmament process.
Hürriyet columnist Nedim Şener wrote that the new mechanism would operate under the coordination of the National Intelligence Organization (MİT).
According to Şener, PKK members will hand over their weapons to Erbil, Sulaymaniyah or the Iraqi central government.
It was stated that the surrendered weapons would be registered and inventoried by MİT.
Inspections in Haftanin and Gara
Şener reported that the process would not be limited to the handover of weapons alone, and that it would also be checked whether the PKK's camps and caves in the Kurdistan Region had been vacated.
It was claimed that inspections would first take place in the Haftanin and Gara regions.
It was noted that MİT would compile the information gathered from the field into a report to be submitted to the National Security Council (MGK).
It was stated that this process would also assess whether activities in Syria and Europe, in addition to Iraq, had come to an end.
Returns to Turkey after MGK assessment
According to the plan reported by Şener, once the disarmament and field inspections are completed, the report prepared by MİT will be taken up by the MGK.
Following the MGK's assessment, the process for PKK members' return to Turkey is expected to begin.
Şener wrote that 7,000 to 8,000 PKK members from Iraq and Syria are projected to lay down their arms and return to Turkey.
It was noted that, under the framework law, the situation of those held in prisons would also begin to be assessed.
Sinjar and Makhmour also part of the plan
Şener's column also included some details concerning Sinjar and Makhmour.
According to this, it is envisaged that approximately 2,200 people in Sinjar will join the Iraqi army, while approximately 8,000 civilians living in Makhmour Camp will return to Turkey.
The details of the mechanism and the figures disclosed have not yet been confirmed by MİT, the MGK, the Iraqi government or Kurdistan Region officials.
