Israel Warned It Could Strike Syrian Site Holding Nuclear Material, Officials Say
Israeli officials say material left over from Bashar al-Assad's Al-Kibar nuclear reactor project is being kept at a facility known as "Site 99."
Following talks between the United States and Israel, the International Atomic Energy Agency is reportedly preparing to remove nuclear material believed to be held at a secret facility in Syria.
According to the U.S.-based news outlet Axios, citing American and Israeli officials, a process has been launched to safely remove nuclear material believed to be held at a secret facility in Syria. Washington and Tel Aviv have reportedly been discussing the matter for more than a year.
U.S. WARNED OF POSSIBLE ISRAELI MILITARY ACTION
According to information relayed by American officials, the facility holds uranium concentrate, produced by processing uranium ore and used in the early stages of nuclear fuel production, along with other nuclear material left over from the Al-Kibar project.
Washington has reportedly urged Israel not to carry out a military operation against the facility because of the nuclear material there. The U.S. is said to have brokered an agreement with Tel Aviv and Damascus to remove the material and to have brought in the IAEA to oversee the process.
IAEA BROUGHT INTO THE PROCESS
According to the report, the International Atomic Energy Agency and Syria have signed an agreement on removing the nuclear material from the facility. The IAEA is said to have since begun preparations for the operation.
