In a written statement, Abdi said the US decision carried major significance for the country's future.
He said:
"We welcome with great satisfaction the decision to remove Syria from the list of state sponsors of terrorism. This decision marks a strategic step toward repairing and strengthening international relations. It also opens the door to a new period of stability, development and work for the future of our country."
Abdi added that the decision was an important achievement serving the population's aspiration to live in security, peace and prosperity.
The US State Department and Treasury Department announced the decision on August 24, 2026, removing Syria from the list of state sponsors of terrorism. At the same time, they announced the removal of Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS) from the list of designated global terrorist organizations and from sanctions lists.
