PKK Response to Leaked Öcalan Notes Targets the Leak, Not the Content
RastinewsFollowing the DEM Parti İmralı delegation, the PKK leadership has also issued a statement on notes leaked to the press from a meeting reportedly held between Abdullah Öcalan and a Kandil delegation. Kandil described the circulation of the texts as "a planned provocation aimed at derailing the process."
The statement, however, did not explicitly deny that such a meeting took place. It claimed the texts contained "false and fabricated statements," but did not specify which passages were untrue or which had been added later.
The objection is to the leak's timing, not the meeting itself
Kandil's statement focused less on the content of the notes than on who put them into circulation, why, and on what date. It called the publication of the documents before and after the law passed by parliament on August 10 "significant," arguing this targeted the Peace and Democratic Society Process.
The stance amounted less to an outright denial of the meeting than to a reaction against the records reaching the public and the timing of their release. No concrete clarification was offered on the date of the meeting, its participants, or the disputed statements.
Journalism itself also drawn into the dispute
The PKK leadership called for disregarding information not confirmed by the DEM Parti İmralı delegation. In doing so, it placed the publication of the documents, as much as their authenticity, at the center of the dispute.
Yet verifying and publishing documents that carry public interest and news value is a journalist's job. The fact that documents relating to a process conducted behind closed doors reached the public does not, on its own, turn an act of journalism into a "provocation."
Kandil's statement reads less as a rebuttal backed by concrete facts and documents than as a political reaction built around the questions of who leaked the notes and why they were published now.
