Doctors in Sulaymaniyah grow new nose on patient's forehead
Surgeons in the Kurdistan Region's Sulaymaniyah city built a new nose from a worker's own rib cartilage after he lost his in a workplace accident, grafting it onto his forehead to grow before final transplant.

The procedure, led by plastic and reconstructive surgeon Dr. Diyar Abdulwahid and his team, began nearly a year ago. In the first stage, surgeons shaped a nasal framework from cartilage harvested from the patient's rib and implanted it in his forehead, the site offering the best tissue compatibility and blood supply.
Dr. Abdulwahid said the forehead was chosen because its skin matches the face in color and texture and carries a strong blood supply. Given the complexity of the technique, he added, the operation was carried out as a free clinical trial.
According to Dr. Abdulwahid, the nasal structure is now fully formed and ready to be transplanted to its intended site. The final procedure awaits the patient's decision.
A similar reconstructive surgery was carried out successfully in China in 2013, on a 22-year-old who had lost his nose in a traffic accident.
