Germany votes today: CDU polling near 5% threshold as Merz's hold on power is tested
Chancellor Friedrich Merz's CDU faces voters today in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern and Berlin. Polls cited by BBC Türkçe put the party at just 6% in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern.

Chancellor Friedrich Merz's CDU goes to the polls today in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern and Berlin. Polls suggest the party could post its worst-ever result in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, according to BBC Türkçe correspondent Değer Akal.
CDU at 6%, AfD at 36%
Polls show the CDU has slumped to 6%. Some observers say the party could fall below the 5% threshold needed to enter parliament. The far-right AfD has more than doubled its support, climbing to 36%. The SPD holds a narrow lead at 37%.
Nationwide, only 13% of Germans now say they approve of Merz's performance — the lowest rating ever recorded for a sitting German chancellor. According to YouGov, one in two voters believes Merz should resign before the end of the year.
Berlin, the CDU's last hope
In Berlin, where the CDU has governed since 2023, polls show it running neck and neck with Left Party candidate Elif Eralp. Merz's chances of staying in office are seen as hinging on the outcome there.
The shadow of Saxony-Anhalt
The AfD topped the vote in Saxony-Anhalt two weeks ago. Merz called it "a deep shock" at the time and rejected calls to resign. AfD co-leader Alice Weidel said Merz's era "is coming to an end."
