RastinewsMesûd Hemo Reşo Hesen, a former SDF member severely injured in a September 12 fire at Kobani Prison, has died at a hospital in Aleppo where he was being treated. His death brings the number of people killed in the fire to 10.

Hesen, who was born in the village of Susan roughly 10 kilometers west of Kobani, was among 17 people injured in the blaze.

Fire broke out after protests

Protests began in Kobani after Sîpan Hiznî, a Kurdish soldier serving with the Syrian army's Hasakah Brigade, was abducted and killed. The unrest continued into the fire that broke out overnight between September 11 and 12 at the prison holding those detained during the demonstrations. Nine people died and 17 were injured in the fire. Local sources said the blaze started after detainees learned they were to be transferred to prisons in Aleppo.

Aleppo's Internal Security Command, which operates under the Damascus government, gave a different death toll, stating in official remarks that seven people had died.

The nine people killed in the fire were buried on September 14 at Şehit Dicle Cemetery in Kobani in a funeral attended by thousands. Speaking at the funeral, Ilham Ahmed said a full investigation into the incident would be opened and that those responsible would be held accountable.
