Sweden election: at least five Kurdish candidates win seats in parliament

RastinewsAt least five Kurdish candidates running for different parties in Sweden's general election have secured seats in parliament. Kadir Kasırga, a Social Democrat candidate and party official, told Rûdaw Diaspora that five Kurdish candidates have been elected so far and have guaranteed their seats.

Who's heading to parliament

According to Kasırga, the Kurdish candidates confirmed for parliament are Lawin Redar, Tala Elkurdi, Sara Gile, Gürgün Bekercioğlu and himself. Kasırga said current results point to a government formed by the Social Democrats and the left bloc.

Some 200,000 votes still uncounted

Kasırga noted the election results are not yet fully final. Results are due Wednesday and Thursday, he said, and about 200,000 votes cast by Swedish residents abroad still need to be counted. He added he does not expect those votes to change the overall outcome.

Three Kurdish candidates in Stockholm

Bawer Esir, another Social Democrat official in Sweden, told Rûdaw that three Kurdish candidates on the Social Democrats' Stockholm list alone are confirmed to win parliamentary seats. Hanna Emin Andersson, a Social Democrat candidate for Stockholm, said she would enter parliament if her party forms the government.

Sweden's general election saw intense competition between the country's political blocs, with the Kurdish diaspora taking an active role through candidates fielded by several parties.
