Armenia's Pashinyan reappointed prime minister after government resigns

RastinewsNikol Pashinyan was reappointed prime minister in Armenia after the government submitted its resignation as the newly elected parliament opened its first session.

Armenia's state news agency Armenpress reported that Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan announced the government's resignation during a live broadcast on social media.

Pashinyan said the National Assembly's 9th convocation had opened its first session that day, and that under the relevant article of Armenia's constitution, the government submitted its resignation to President Vahagn Khachaturyan on the day the National Assembly held its first sitting.

He said the constitution required the president to accept the government's resignation, and that current government members would continue in their roles until a new government was formed. He added that once the newly elected National Assembly's term began, the person nominated by the parliamentary majority would be appointed prime minister.

Pashinyan said the parliamentary majority would put forward its candidate for prime minister that day, after which the appointment would follow.

A decree later published on the presidential website confirmed that the government's resignation had been accepted.

A separate decree announced that Pashinyan had been reappointed prime minister.
In Armenia's parliamentary election, Prime Minister Pashinyan's Civil Contract party won 61 of the 105 seats, securing a single-party majority.
