A court in Munich, Germany, has sentenced Farhad N. to life in prison for driving a vehicle into a rally organized by the Verdi union. Judges also ruled that the crime carried "particular gravity," a finding that lowers the defendant's chances of early release.
The verdict was announced in the trial over the vehicle attack on the Verdi union demonstration in Munich. The court convicted the 25-year-old defendant, an Afghan national, on two counts of murder and 23 counts of attempted murder, sentencing him to life in prison. Judges also found that the crime carried particular gravity.
The attack took place in February 2025, when Farhad N. drove his car into a crowd of demonstrators, killing a woman and her two-year-old daughter and injuring more than 40 people. The court stated that the attack was carried out deliberately.
Prosecutors argued the attack was driven by ideological motives and feelings of rage, while the defense contended the defendant suffered from psychological problems and sought a lighter sentence along with psychiatric treatment. The court rejected the defense's request.
Farhad N. came to Germany in 2016. The verdict is being regarded as one of the country's most serious politically motivated attack cases in recent years.
