More than 1,000 legal professionals in Germany have called for constitutional proceedings to be launched against the AfD to have the party banned, saying it represents a clear threat to democracy.
The group, comprising more than 1,000 lawyers, judges, prosecutors, administrative law experts and legal trainees, is demanding that Germany begin constitutional proceedings to ban the Alternative for Germany (AfD) party. In an open letter addressed to the federal government, they said the party is acting against the principles of human dignity and the democratic order enshrined in Germany's Basic Law.
The letter, drafted under the leadership of the Republican Lawyers' Association (RAV), warns that if the AfD's party program were implemented, it could damage democratic institutions and put vulnerable social groups at particular risk. RAV co-chair Angela Furmaniak said the constitutional mechanism designed for such situations must now be applied, calling on politicians to "act before it is too late."
