Abdul Ballout, suspected of carrying out an attack on Berlin's Christopher Street Day (CSD) event, was shot dead by police during an operation in the Spandau district.
According to German media reports, the 21-year-old German national was killed by police fire during an operation at a garden allotment on Ruhlebener Straße. The operation was reported to be ongoing.
Berlin police said in a statement on WhatsApp that Ballout advanced on officers with a knife during the operation in Spandau, prompting special forces (SEK) units to open fire. Fire crews treated Ballout at the scene for serious injuries, but he could not be saved.
Berlin police spokesperson Florian Nath said the investigation into Ballout's fatal shooting would be handled by the Berlin homicide unit. He added that the Federal Prosecutor's Office had taken over the investigation into the Tiergarten attack, and that Berlin police would therefore not release further information on the case.
